The NHL coaching market continues to heat up. We’d already seen Mike Sullivan and Joel Quenneville get picked up by the New York Rangers and the Anaheim Ducks, but now one more big fish is off the market with Rick Tocchet going to the Philadelphia Flyers. Along with that, his former assistant, Adam Foote, gets his first coaching gig with the Vancouver Canucks.

Now that leaves us with four teams with coaching vacancies in the Boston BruinsChicago BlackhawksPittsburgh Penguins and Seattle Kraken, with the potential for the Los Angeles Kings and New York Islanders to join the fold should their new general managers look to move on from their current coaches. The coaching market still has plenty of options for a new head coach, even with the big names gone, whether that’s the experienced coaches in Peter Laviolette, John Tortorella and Jay Woodcroft, some rebound options like Dallas Eakins, Gerard Gallant and Derek LaLonde, and some new candidates like Adam Foote, Mitch Love and Todd Nelson.

Frank Seravalli talked about which NHL coach will be taken off the market next after today’s hirings on Daily Faceoff Live.

Frank Seravalli: I would expect that there’s going to be a run on coaches here in the next few days with teams not wanting to be left holding the bag. Rick Tocchet is off the board, we mentioned Joel Quenneville with the Ducks, and of course Mike Sullivan was also in that shot caller category, him going to the Rangers.

Now, what’s next? I would imagine that Jay Woodcroft is the next guy off the board, and I would point toward the Boston Bruins as being a real strong fit. But then you’ve got some other really interesting candidates, including some whose teams are still playing, that teams are waiting to find out.
