The National Hockey League has postponed Wednesday’s game between the Chicago Blackhawks and Buffalo Sabres to Thursday night, the league announced Wednesday afternoon.

The game had originally been slated to take place at KeyBank Center in Buffalo on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET. Instead, it’ll be held in Buffalo on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. ET.

Additionally, the Blackhawks vs. Sabres game had been scheduled to be broadcast nationally on TNT in the United States. With its postponement, the network will instead show the game between the Detroit Red Wings and Florida Panthers on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. ET.

The last week has seen an extreme cold front move over much of Canada and the continental United States, with temperatures in some regions falling below -40 (both Celsius and Fahrenheit).

The Buffalo region has been blanketed in heavy snow during this stretch of severe winter weather, with transportation in and out of the city slowing to a crawl.

Other events have also been affected. Over the weekend, the Buffalo Bills’ wild card playoff game against the Pittsburgh Steelers at the outdoor Highmark Stadium was pushed from Sunday to Monday; the Bills ultimately defeated the Steelers by a 31-17 score.

These Sabres are already on the verge of missing the playoffs for the 14th consecutive season. They rank seventh in the Atlantic Division with a 19-21-4 record and 42 points in 44 games.

Of course, the Blackhawks are nowhere near the playoff picture, especially with Connor Bedard out of the lineup as he recovers from a broken jaw. Chicago is currently second-last in the entire league with a 13-29-2 record and 28 points through 44 games this year.

With the Sabres/Blackhawks game now postponed, there are only two games on the docket for Wednesday night: in addition to Detroit vs. Florida, the Montreal Canadiens will visit the New Jersey Devils at 7:00 p.m. ET.
