NHL Prospect Pool Hub: Everything you need to know about your team’s future
If you’re reading this, you’re likely a diehard hockey fan.
Caring about your team’s current NHL roster is one thing. Paying attention to players that won’t make an impact for another three to four years is another. So if you care about your team’s future, props to you.
We’ve been doing deep dives into each team’s prospect pool for the past month. More than 300 players have been analyzed, with each team having varying levels of success at drafting and developing. We’ll have a full team ranking next week, and a top prospect ranking before the season starts, so keep a look out for that.
One of the most interesting teams to look at was the New Jersey Devils. While most contending teams have poor prospect pools, the Devils are set for a good future. Other notable teams with strong pipelines include Buffalo, Carolina, Chicago, Columbus, Minnesota, Montreal and Philadelphia. But you’ll need to wait a few weeks for a more detailed breakdown.
The criteria for being labeled a “prospect” was simple: for the most part, players had to have played in 50 or fewer NHL games, or at least spent more time outside of the NHL than in it last year. Most players were 23 and under, but some older players were included based on different circumstances. That mainly was for goaltenders and players who dealt with significant injuries the past few years: that’s how 24-year-old Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll made it.
Washington’s Connor McMichael is still seen as a prospect to some, but he spent 2021-22 in the NHL. So even though he didn’t factor into the Capitals’ lineup for more than a few games last year, he’s not a prospect, given his 75 games played at the age of 22.
