Nightly Scrap: Flyers, Bobrovsky win again at Consol

Sergei Bobrovsky won his second game at the Consol Energy Center as the Flyers overtook the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2.

After defenseman Kris Letang took a first period lead, Philadelphia would fire back with three straight goals– with two coming from Claude Giroux. With 45 seconds left in the game Tyler Kennedy added a goal for the Pens, who had their offense somewhat tamed. Then again, it is always a good night when you hold Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby to only one point each.

Naturally, Marc-Andre Fleury took the loss.

Back at Madison Square Garden, the New York Rangers and Carolina Hurricanes played a wide open contest, forcing a combined 81 shots on goal. At the end of the day it was a powerplay marker for Erik Cole late in the third period as Henrik Lundqvist failed to hold off the speedy and tenacious Canes.

Ryan Callahan, Tuomo Ruutu, Jeff Skinner and Cole all put up multi-point efforts for their teams, respectively. The young Skinner was particularly impressive with his first two goal game in the NHL, not to mention he obtained the primary assist on the game winning goal.

Both Ryan Miller and the Buffalo Sabres continued to struggle as they lost 4-3 to the Atlanta Thrashers. The team squandered an early two goal lead and only forced overtime with eight seconds left, thanks to Derek Roy.

Dustin Byfuglien would score the game winner and now has nine points in his first 10 games. Keep in mind he is doing that with defenseman eligibility, which ranks him in the top 10 in scoring.

The Montreal Canadiens got another inspiring effort from all of their forwards, having three separate lines score against the New York Islanders. Tomas Plekanec would score his fifth goal of the season but it was Benoit Pouliot who put across the game winner, his second on the year.

Alex Auld earned his first win in his season/Habs debut while Dwayne Roloson lost his second straight game.

In Chicago, the champs struggled against the young Edmonton Oilers eventually losing 7-4. The Oilers chased starting goalie Marty Turco on 12 shots before putting three past backup Corey Crawford.

Where do we even start with the scoring? In no particular order…

Taylor Hall scored his second in as many nights and now has four points in two games. Still think the Oilers should sent him back to Windsor?
Duncan Keith finished the night with three assists but still managed to be a -1. Two of those points came on the powerplay, bonus.
Jonathan Toews had a two point night, both coming with the man advantage. Seven shots on goal also offset the -2.
Patrick Kane finally scored, breaking a six-game drought.
Patrick Sharp now leads the League with 10 goals.
Jordan Eberle put another two points up on the board; he now has a five game point streak.
Ales Hemsky and Kurtis Foster also had multiple point nights. Good news for Foster who was previously listed as day-to-day. Good news for Hemsky who might be turning the corner.
Dave Bolland did not play in the third period, creating speculation that he may have re-injured his back.
With two assists, Magnus Paajarvi has four points over his last three games. All of these youngsters seem to be rolling for the Oil.
Sam Gagner scored his first two goals of the season. He only scored more than once in a game one time last season.

Our last contest brings us to bright Anaheim where the struggling New Jersey Devils try to succumb the Ducks. The Devils have been awful, sitting in the basement of the Eastern Conference as they continue to look for chemistry but they managed to take over 14th last night with their 2-1 win.

The captain, Jamie Langenbrunner tied the game with his first goal of the season while Patrik Elias finished it off with his third period marker. Elias moved to center with decent results, playing between Alexander Vasyunov and Ilya Kovalchuk. Martin Brodeur turned aside 27 of 28 for his third victory of the season.
