The Nottingham Panthers have announced they will retire Adam Johnson’s No. 47 on Saturday, Dec. 14 against the Fife Flyers.

Johnson will become the seventh player to have his jersey retired by the Panthers.

Johnson was tragically killed last season after being cut by Matt Petgrave’s skate blade while playing in an Elite Ice Hockey League game with Nottingham. His death sparked controversy around the hockey world concerning neck guards, with leagues like the WHL, OHL, QMJHL, and others mandating neck guards for all players.

Panthers CEO, Omar Pacha, said in a statement, “We were honoured to have Adam in Nottingham and not only was he a great talent on the ice, he was a fantastic person off the ice also.

“Adam made an impact on everyone who met him in the short time he was with us and he will forever be in our thoughts.

“We all want Adam’s memory to live on for who he was as a person and what he contributed to the sport of ice hockey.

“This will be a very special night for all of us as we come together to retire Adam’s number 47 jersey.”

The Hibbing, Minnesota native signed with the Panthers for the 2023–24 season after spending the previous year with the Augsburger Panther in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL). He tallied four goals and seven points in seven games with the Panthers prior to his passing.

Johnson began his professional career in 2017 after spending two seasons at the University of Minnesota-Duluth where he won an NCHC championship in the 2016–17 season. Johnson spent the first three years of his professional career in the Pittsburgh Penguins organization, collecting four points in 13 NHL games over parts of two seasons.
