Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid suffered an upper-body injury in Saturday’s game against the Winnipeg Jets and will miss 1–2 weeks, the club announced Sunday.

McDavid, 26, picked up a pair of assists in the 3–2 overtime loss to the Jets, but he remained on the bench for the final few minutes of regulation and all of the overtime period of the game at Rogers Place in Edmonton.

During McDavid’s final shift of Saturday’s game, he appeared to reach for his left side as the Oilers entered the offensive zone and quickly headed to the bench.

In all, McDavid logged 20:48 of ice time and took one shot on goal in the loss to the Jets. The Oilers have now lost back-to-back games and currently occupy the fifth position in the Pacific Division with a 1–3–1 record to start the 2023–24 season.

The Oilers originally selected McDavid with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 NHL Draft, moving up from the No. 3 position by way of the draft lottery.

McDavid has remained relatively healthy since his rookie year, in which he appeared in just 45 games before suffering a season-ending collarbone injury. He also suffered a serious knee injury in the final game of the 2018–19 season but returned to full health for the start of the 2019–20 campaign.

It remains to be seen whether McDavid will return to game action for the Oilers in time for the Heritage Classic game against the Calgary Flames at Commonwealth Stadium on October 29. Before that, the Oilers will take on the Minnesota Wild on October 24 and the New York Rangers on October 26.

McDavid led the NHL with 64 goals and 153 points in 82 games with the Oilers in 2022–23. He has two goals and eight points through five games with the Oilers this season.
