Oilers don’t match Blues’ offer sheets for Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway
The St. Louis Blues have scored a couple of young and talented players.
On Tuesday, after the seven-day deadline passed to match offer sheets for the two restricted free agents, the Edmonton Oilers have decided to give up defenseman Philip Broberg and forward Dylan Holloway to the Blues.

Broberg: Two years, $4,580,917 AAV
Holloway: Two years, $2,290,457 AAV
Edmonton gets a 2025 2nd and 3rd as compensation.
Last week, St. Louis tendered the offer sheets to the two players. Broberg has signed a two-year contract with an AAV of $4,580,917, and Holloway’s deal is also for two years with an AAV of $2,290,457. Since the Oilers didn’t match, they will be compensated with the Blues’ 2025 second-round pick for Broberg and their third-round pick for Holloway. Had either contract been for one dollar more, the compensation would have increased.
As a result, the Oilers have $1,958,333 in cap space. That will increase as forward Evander Kane is set to have surgery for a lower-body injury and is expected to be out for months. Edmonton will be able to place him on long-term injured reserve at the beginning of the season, with his $5.5 million cap hit coming off the book, giving Edmonton some more flexibility.
Broberg’s tenure with the Oilers has been rocky. The eighth-overall pick from the 2019 draft has played 81 games with the team over the past three seasons, but spent most of the 2023-24 campaign with Edmonton’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors. This past December, the team granted the Swedish blueliner permission to seek a trade, though nothing happened by the trade deadline. Over his time in the NHL, Broberg has scored two goals and 13 points, with a plus/minus of -5. He did play in 10 playoff games this past spring, as the Oilers made it all the way to the Stanley Cup Final.
Holloway played a little bit more last season with Edmonton, scoring six goals and nine points in 38 games. In 25 games in last year’s playoffs, the 22-year-old notched five goals and seven points. The former Wisconsin Badger joined the Oilers organization during the 2021-22 season, after being taken by the team 14th overall in the 2020 NHL Draft. In 89 career games, Holloway has notched nine goals and nine assists.
