Senators, Fabian Zetterlund agree to three-year contract extension

According to a report by Daily Faceoff Insider and President of Hockey Content Frank Seravalli, the Ottawa Senators have agreed to terms on a three-year contract extension with forward Fabian Zetterlund.
According to Seravalli, Zetterlund will make a total of $12.825 million for an average annual value and cap hit of $4.275 million.
Zetterlund, a 25-year-old Swedish winger, was acquired at the trade deadline from the San Jose Sharks in a deal that sent Noah Gregor, Zach Opastchuk and a 2025 second round pick to the Sharks.
After joining the Senators, Zetterlund tallied five points in the final 20 games of the regular season. He then did not record a point in the team’s six-game loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Prior to the trade, he had 36 points in 64 games and managed to post a plus-8 rating on one of the league’s worst teams.
Zetterlund was drafted by and first broke into the NHL as a member of the New Jersey Devils, but he was a key piece in the trade that sent Swiss winger Timo Meier to New Jersey at the 2023 trade deadline.
In his only full season in San Jose, Zetterlund put up a career-high 44 points 2023-2024.
The 2024-2025 campaign saw Ottawa return to the postseason for the first time since 2017.
This summer, the team will look to build upon the progress last year’s group made and move toward becoming a consistent postseason mainstay.
Once the Zetterlund contract is finalized, the team will have about $10.7 million cap space according to PuckPedia with which to pursue that goal.
The team currently has nine forwards, seven defensemen and one goalie signed to NHL contracts, with veteran center Claude Giroux as the team’s most significant pending unrestricted free agent.
