Mathieu Joseph and the Ottawa Senators have avoided arbitration by coming to terms on a four-year deal carrying a $2.95-million AAV.

The 25-year-old, whom the Senators acquired at the trade deadline in the Nick Paul deal, drew into 11 games with the Senators this season potting four goals and 12 points. On the year as a whole, he established career highs in assists, with 18, and points, with 30, over 69 games between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Senators.

“Mathieu’s addition made an immediate positive impact as someone who fit in well with our group,” Senators general manager Pierre Dorion said in a statement released by the club. “He has high-end speed, a nose for the net, and is responsible in his own end. He’s long demonstrated good upside and is someone we’re counting on to have another solid season both in 2022-23 and beyond.”

The contract breaks down as follows, the Senators included in their release: $2.5 million in 2022-23, $2.7 million in 2023-24, $3.3 million in 2024-25, and $3.3 million in 2025-26.

Chosen by the Lightning in the fourth round of the 2015 draft, Joseph has appeared in 232 games in the NHL, scoring 41 goals and 82 points.
