The Ottawa Senators have added some goaltending depth for the rest of the season, signing Dylan Ferguson to a one-year deal worth $750,000.

The 24-year-old has split the season with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies and Belleville Senators. Belleville acquired his AHL rights late last month to help fill in while Mads Sogaard was called up due to injuries. He’s 1-1-0 in two starts with the Senators, and went 2-2-0 with the Marlies earlier in the year. Ferguson served as an extra goalie for the Marlies while Joseph Woll was out to start the season.

Ferguson earned a few starts early in the season once Erik Kallgren was called up to the Maple Leafs, but ultimately fell out of favor once Kallgren and Woll both returned. Ferguson has split time between the AHL and ECHL throughout his career, recording a 10-7-0 record with two shutouts in 23 games between Henderson, Toronto and Belleville. He also has a 14-7-3 record with Fort Wayne in the ECHL.

Ferguson saw 9:14 of NHL action with Vegas back in 2017 as the team dealt with injuries. He stopped one of the two shots sent his way in relief of Maxime Lagace.

The Senators’ goalie situation has been a hot topic in recent weeks. Cam Talbot is one of the top names on the trade block, while Anton Forsberg is out for the rest of the regular season. Sogaard was recently named NHL rookie of the month and isn’t likely won’t return to the AHL for the rest of the regular season. Ferguson’s signing gives the senators seven goaltenders under contract, which includes AHLers Kevin Mandolese and Antoine Bibeau. Top goaltending prospect Leevi Merilainen is currently playing in Finland.
