Senators to honor Andrew Hammond’s ‘Hamburglar’ run during game on March 1

The Ottawa Senators will pay tribute to former goaltender Andrew Hammond prior to puck drop of their March 1 home date versus the San Jose Sharks.

Starring in the Senators’ crease from 2013-17, Hammond put together a phenomenal showing through the balance of the 2014-15 season, a 24-game run in which he found the win column an astounding 20 times coupled with a .941 save percentage, 1.79 goals-against average, and three shutouts. Combined with his surname, Hammond’s ability to steal games quickly earned him the nickname ‘The Hamburglar’ from Senators’ faithful.

In all, Hammond’s incredible run lifted the Senators from 10 points back of a playoff position to a 99-point finish, securing the first wildcard seed in the Eastern Conference and a first-round matchup with the Atlantic Division rival Montreal Canadiens, the same opponent that Hammond faced in his first-ever start earlier that year before putting together a 42-save performance en route to a 4-2 victory.

In March 2015, Hammond was recognized as the NHL’s first start of the month following a dominant stretch in which he went 10-1-1 coupled with a .930 save percentage and 2.09 goals-against average.

Seven years later, Hammond announced his retirement following 67 NHL games counting stops with the Senators, Colorado Avalanche, Canadiens, and New Jersey Devils in which he totaled a 31-20-7 record with a .916 save percentage, 2.57 goals-against average, and four shutouts.

Beyond the NHL, Hammond also saw success at the AHL level where through eight seasons and 176 appearances with Binghamton, Belleville, Iowa, Rochester, and San Antonio he went 84-69-17 with a .906 save percentage, 2.89 goals-against average, and 13 shutouts.

A 37-year-old British Columbia native, Hammond is a graduate of the BCHL’s Vernon Vipers. With the Vipers in 2009, Hammond was recognized as the BCHL’s top goaltender after he went 27-12-1 with a .912 save percentage, 2.30 goals-against average, and five shutouts.
