Patrick Kane wants a contract soon, but where?
It’s rare that we see free agency news this late into the season, but Patrick Kane is certainly an exception to the norm considering the circumstances. But, people still don’t know quite yet which team will be picking him up, or even when this signing is happening.
And of course, there’s plenty of concerns. On one hand, Kane is one of those premier talents in the NHL, but as someone who is just a few days away from turning 35, you aren’t going to be getting prime Kane. And he’ll be coming off a hip resurfacing surgery that so far has no precedent for a strong return to form in the NHL, with even Nicklas Backstrom having to step back from the game last week. But even past-his-prime Kane still had 21 goals and 36 assists for 57 points in 73 games last season, so maybe he could be the first.
So what’s the latest on Kane? Frank Seravalli gave us the latest on Daily Faceoff Live.
Frank Seravalli: The latest on Kane is that the interview process is ongoing. He is talking to teams, we just talked about the New York Rangers. Surprising to hear a couple days ago from Larry Brooks and the New York Post that the Rangers are out. Part of that is an actual salary cap mechanism issue.
Kane wants to sign soon, like in the next eight days, hopefully by the end of next week so we can stop answering this question. But he wants to sign soon and the way the Rangers are structured right now with those guys, especially Adam Fox being out, they don’t actually have any extra cap space, even $1 million, to be able to get something like that done.
They could maybe have made something work, it’s just probably not in the cards, and that’s why the Kane camp specifically is going in another direction.
