— Pittsburgh Penguins (@penguins) October 26, 2024Per league rules, Jarry’s conditioning stint can last up to 14 days, but his cap hit counts against the Penguins’ cap, along with his spot on the 23-man NHL roster.
The 29-year-old heads down to the minors after a tough start to the 2024-25 season in Pittsburgh. Jarry has made three starts, going 1-1-0 with an alarming 5.47 goals-against average and .836 save percentage. His lone win came on Oct. 14 against the Montreal Canadiens, though his next appearance ended early. Two days later, against the Buffalo Sabres, Jarry was chased after allowing three goals on five shots in the opening period, in which the Pens went on to rally and win 6-5 in overtime behind the play of Joel Blomqvist.
Jarry also allowed six goals in the opening game of the season on Oct. 9 against the New York Rangers.
The Penguins hope their veteran netminder can find his game with a few appearances in the AHL. While Blomqvist has looked in stretches so far, the team needs to have more consistency out of Jarry this year if they want to avoid missing the playoffs for the third consecutive season.
In 2023-24, Jarry went 19-25-5 in 51 appearances, posting a 2.91 GAA, a .903 SV% and six shutouts.
Jarry is in the second season of his five-year contract, which he signed with the Pens in July 2023. It carries a $5.375 million AAV through the 2027-28 campaign and a modified no-trade clause for the entirety of the deal.
The Surrey, British Columbia native has appeared in 260 games in his NHL career, posting a record of 137-86-25 with a 2.72 GAA, a .911 SV% and 19 shutouts.
The Penguins (3-5-1) are sixth in the Metropolitan Division. They are scheduled to face the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday night.
