It’s been a horrid start to the 2026-27 NHL season for the Philadelphia Flyers.

Through seven games, the not-so-Broad Street Bullies are 0-5-2, last in both the Metropolitan Division and Eastern Conference and the second-worst record in the league.

Only one player on the team has scored more than one goal — Matvei Michkov — and Travis Konecny is the only person who has more than two points through seven games. We’re not even 10 per cent into the season, but with how the NHL standings are set up, it’s easy to fall into a hole early in the year.

On Tuesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton are joined by former NHL video coach Steve Peters for another edition of “The Film Room” to discuss the Flyers’ struggles and what’s gone wrong in the city of brotherly love.

Tyler Yaremchuk: What’s the problem here? Is it Tocchet? Is it the roster? Is it players playing bad?

Steve Peters: This Flyers team has a lot of problems. A lot of problems. I think first and foremost, this was a team that overachieved last season, that wasn’t ready for the playoffs at all. The management and coaching staff will both tell you this team was not prepared for the playoffs; they reached it thanks to great goaltending and incredibly tight defending.

But now the expectations are raised: they made it to the second round, so fans expect more. But the lack of training camp hurt different teams differently, and it really hurt the Flyers. Not only did Dan Vladar get hurt during that time, but they didn’t get a chance to establish that tight defending that really made them successful last year.

And lets face it: nothing is going wrong. They can’t defend — they were ninth in goals against last year, but they’re 28th right now — that’s OK if you’re outscoring those problems … but they’re not.

This is not the same team we saw at the end of the playoffs.
