Philadelphia Flyers name Daniel Briere special assistant to general manager
A former Flyer is rejoining the team’s front office in a full-time role.
The Philadelphia Flyers named Daniel Briere special assistant to the general manager Tuesday afternoon marking his return to the City of Brotherly Love in his first full-time role since he played there eight years ago.
While Briere spent two years post-retirement in the same role, Briere had been working with the ECHL’s Maine Mariners as their vice-president of hockey operations and later GM since 2017.
“I’m very happy to add Danny to our hockey operations team in a full-time role,” said Flyers president of hockey operations and general manager Chuck Fletcher in a statement. “His insight and experience from 25 years in professional hockey, as well as first-hand knowledge of the Philadelphia Flyers, is a valuable asset for our organization and I look forward to working closely with him on a day-to-day basis.”
Briere, 44, will be involved in all aspects of hockey operations with the Flyers including scouting and player development, the club said. Over the last two years, he’s worked with the Flyers in a part-time role with the club’s prospects and current players on and off the ice.
As a player, Briere spent six years with the Flyers appearing in 364 games where he scored 124 goals and 283 points. In the 2009-10 season, he helped the Flyers reach the Cup Finals where they eventually lost to the Chicago Blackhawks in six games. Briere, however, led the league in playoff scoring.
“I’m excited for this new opportunity to join the Flyers hockey operations department,” said Briere. “Philadelphia is a place that I’ve called home for a long time and have had some of the most memorable moments in my career. I want to thank Chuck Fletcher and Dave Scott for their confidence and support over the last several years, and I look forward to helping them continue to build a successful team on and off the ice.”
