Flyers place Ryan Poehling on injured reserve; Rodrigo Abols recalled
The Philadelphia Flyers announced Monday that center Ryan Poehling has been added to the injured reserve with an upper-body injury. In a corresponding roster move, center Rodrigo Abols has been recalled from the AHL’s Lehigh Valley Phantoms.
Facing the New York Islanders on Thursday, Poehling left early in the first period and did not return following an illegal check to the head by Maxim Tsyplakov. The Islanders right winger was not whistled on the infraction but later received a three-game ban by the NHL Department of Player Safety.
On the season, Poehling has made 43 appearances with the Flyers in which he has registered four goals and 11 assists for 15 points. The 26-year-old Lakeville, Minn., native is in his second season with the Flyers, following the 2023-24 campaign that saw him collect a career high of 28 points counting 11 goals and 17 assists through 77 contests.
Originally selected 25th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2017 NHL Draft, Poehling has seen 258 career contests counting stops with the Canadiens, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Flyers in which he has tallied 35 goals and 44 assists for 79 points.
Per PuckPedia, Poehling is in the first year of a two-year pact that carries a $1.9-million annual average value.
For Abols, the 29-year-old Latvian-born forward joins the Flyers with the opportunity to make his NHL debut. Abols has seen 34 contests with the Phantoms this season, registering nine goals and 10 assists for 19 points to sit fourth in team scoring.
A seventh-round selection by the Vancouver Canucks in the 2016 NHL Draft, Abols signed a one-year, two-way agreement with the Flyers this past offseason after spending the prior four campaigns competing in Sweden.
On the season, the Flyers sit 21-20-6 and three points back of the Metropolitan Division rival Columbus Blue Jackets for the second wildcard position in the Eastern Conference.
