The Philadelphia Flyers are closing in on Rick Tocchet as their next head coach, sources told Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli on Wednesday.

After spending two-and-a-half seasons as the Vancouver Canucks’ bench boss, the 61-year-old went 108-65-27, winning the Jack Adams Award as coach of the year following the 2023-24 season.

With Tocchet joining the Flyers, a team he spent 11 of his 18 NHL seasons as a player, there’s a good chance the team will try to be aggressive this offseason, acquiring talent via trades and free agency.

On Wednesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk discuss Tocchet’s expected hiring and what that means for the City of Brotherly Love.

Tyler Yaremchuk: Not to do the full offseason preview now, but Danny Briere has seven draft picks in the first two rounds this upcoming June. He has $24 million in cap space, and has pretty close to a full roster under contract.

Does this Tocchet hiring indicate that maybe the Flyers are ready to push down on the gas a little bit this summer?

Frank Seravalli: I think it does. As good as the 2026 NHL Draft is, I don’t think they want to be a lottery team. They want to take an important, significant step forward. I think they want to leverage the draft picks they have to make trades.

I think they’re going to be trying to spend that cap space. They’ve never been a team afraid to spend, as evidenced by this hiring, and I expect a significantly aggressive summer for the Flyers.
