Pierre-Luc Dubois is looking sharp early on with Capitals
We’re three weeks into the 2024-25 NHL season, and so far, the Washington Capitals look like they’re on the right track. Through their first six games, the club is 5-1-0, winning five straight after their season-opening loss to the New Jersey Devils.
While all eyes are on Alex Ovechkin and his attempt at breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record, offseason acquisition Pierre-Luc Dubois has been on fire, scoring a goal and four assists for five points, averaging 17:42 of ice time.
Taken No. 3 overall in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, there’s no doubt Dubois has elite talent, but a lack of production and questionable effort levels have left the 6-foot-4 winger bouncing around from club to club.
On Thursday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk discuss Dubois’ hot start and if it’s sustainable over the course of a full season.
Tyler Yaremchuk: Because the Dubois trade happened so early in the offseason, it was kind of forgotten for some casual hockey fans, or people who don’t follow the Capitals or Kings.
But if you look at Dubois, five points in six games to start the season, you roll your eyes at the idea that a fresh start was good for him, because he’s gotten so many, but so far so good for P.L.D. in Washington.
Frank Seravalli: He looks good, he looks recharged, and I’m sure that anyone who gets traded after the first year of an eight-year deal should light a fire under your ass. That should be the baseline.
My question is: can this be sustained? To be fair, it’s the same question I’d ask of another really good story and another guy who used to be in Washington in Anthony Mantha, who’s with the Calgary Flames and is also off to a good start. These are two bigger guys who have tons of skill, where consistency and compete has been the thing that’s dogged them their entire careers.
