Penguins sign Filip Hallander to two-year contract

The Pittsburgh Penguins announced Tuesday that the club has signed center Filip Hallander to a two-year contract. The deal is set to begin in the coming campaign and will carry a $775,000 cap hit.
Hallander was originally chosen 58th overall by the Penguins in the 2018 NHL Draft. In 2021, he made his NHL debut, while he has since made three total appearances at the NHL level. The 24-year-old Swedish-born forward has also spent part of two seasons with the minor-league affiliated Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, highlighted by the 2022-23 season where through 43 games he notched 11 goals and 22 assists to rank fourth in team scoring with 33 points. In all, through 104 career contests in the AHL, Hallander has collected 61 points counting 25 goals and 36 assists.
Hallander has spent the past two seasons competing with Timra IK of the first-tier Swedish league. In 2024-25, he paced the squad with north of point-per-game production counting 26 goals and 27 assists for 53 points coming in 51 games. For his efforts, Hallander was recognized as the league’s Forward of the Year. In all, through his five seasons in the top-ranked Swedish league, Hallander has totaled 65 goals and 83 assists for 148 points in 225 career contests.
Hallander has also seen success in international competition highlighted by the 2016 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge where through six games he finished with one goal en route to a gold-medal finish. Hallander also joined Sweden at the 2019 World Juniors as well as the 2021 IIHF World Championship.
For the Penguins, the club closed out the 2024-25 campaign with a 34-36-12 showing and 11 points back of a playoff position in the Eastern Conference. On Monday, the Penguins mutually parted ways with head coach Mike Sullivan following a 10-year run behind the bench.
