Pittsburgh Penguins sign Grzelcyk, Shea, Hollowell to one-year contracts
On Monday, the Pittsburgh Penguins announced that the club has signed defensemen Matt Grzelcyk, Ryan Shea and Mac Hollowell to one-year contracts.
Grzelcyk’s contract will be worth $2.75 million, while Shea and Hollowell will make the League minimum $775,000 in 2024-25.
Grzelcyk has racked up over 445 NHL games in his career. After being drafted by the Boston Bruins in the third round (No. 85) of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, he made his NHL debut in 2016-17. Grzelyck has spent all eight seasons of his career with the Bruins. In 445 regular-season games, he has tallied 135 points (25 goals, 110 assists) and a whopping plus-137 rating. He has 14 points (five goals, nine assists) in 66 career playoff games, playing a career-high 20 games during the Bruins’ run to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final in 2019.
Shea is an ongoing project for the Penguins. He made his NHL debut with Pittsburgh last season and finished with one goal in 31 regular-season games. The 27-year-old split his time with the Wilkes Barre/Scranton Penguins in the American Hockey League where he tallied six points (two goals, four assists) in 23 games. Shea was originally drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the fourth round (No. 121) of the 2015 NHL Draft.
Hollowell is an AHL defender with six NHL games under his belt. The 25-year-old played all six games in 2022-23 with the Toronto Maple Leafs, tallying two assists and finishing with a plus-3 rating. Since being drafted by Toronto in the fourth round (No. 118) of the 2018 NHL Draft, Hollowell has spent most of his time in the AHL. In 188 AHL games with the Toronto Marlies and Hartford Wolf Pack, the Ontario native has 105 points (13 goals, 92 assists). He tallied three assists in 10 Calder Cup Playoff games for the Wolf Pack last season.
