Pittsburgh Penguins trade forward Reilly Smith to New York Rangers
The Pittsburgh Penguins have traded forward Reilly Smith to the New York Rangers in exchange for two draft picks, Daily Faceoff hockey insider Frank Seravalli reported Monday afternoon.
Smith, 33, scored 13 goals and 40 points in 76 games with the Penguins during the 2023-24 regular season. The 6’1″ right wing has one year remaining on his current contract, which carries a $5 million annual cap hit.
According to Seravalli, the Rangers are sending the Penguins a second-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft and a fifth-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft in exchange for the final year of Smith’s deal. The Penguins are also retaining 25 percent ($1.25 million) of Smith’s remaining contract value.
The Penguins previously acquired Smith from the Vegas Golden Knights last summer in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft.
Smith won the Stanley Cup as a member of the Vegas Golden Knights in 2023, scoring four goals and 14 points in 22 playoff games to help the club capture its first-ever championship.
After stints with the Dallas Stars, Boston Bruins, and Florida Panthers to begin his NHL career, Smith became one of the inaugural members of the Golden Knights franchise in 2017 when the Panthers traded Jonathan Marchessault to Vegas in exchange for an assurance that they would select Smith in that year’s expansion draft.
At the time, Smith was about to begin a five-year contract with the Panthers worth $5 million per season. Vegas took on the entirety of the deal, during which Smith surpassed the 50-point mark three times. He was one of a select group of original “Golden Misfits” to win the Stanley Cup in Vegas after playing in the team’s first season.
Through 840 career games over 13 NHL seasons with the Stars, Bruins, Panthers, Golden Knights, and Penguins, Smith has collected 213 goals and 513 points. He’s added 26 goals and 79 points in 106 playoff contests.
