United States President Donald Trump will not attend the 4 Nations Face-Off final on Thursday in Boston when Canada and the United States compete for the championship, sources told Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli.

Thursday’s showdown will mark the second meetup between Canada and the United States at the 4 Nations Face-Off following Saturday’s round robin contest in Montreal in which the Americans prevailed 3-1. En route to the victory, Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin scored for the United States while Tampa Bay Lightning forward Jake Guentzel also tallied twice. Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid scored the lone goal for Canada.

With Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau attending Saturday’s contest, there remained the possibility that his American counterpart could attend Thursday’s game in Boston following an invitation from Team USA general manager Bill Guerin of the Minnesota Wild.

“We would love it if President Trump was in attendance,” said Guerin, per the Associated Press. “We have a room full of proud American players and coaches and staff. Listen, we’re just trying to represent our country the best way we can.”

While Canada and the United States battle for hockey supremacy at the 4 Nations Face-Off, the tournament comes on the heels of the American President considering tariffs against its northern neighbor, an issue that drew jeers from fans in attendance at the Bell Centre in Montreal.

In November, Trump was elected as the 47th President of the United States, defeating Democrat nominee Kamala Harris. Last month, Trump was sworn into office for a second, non-consecutive term following his initial four-year run as President of the United States from 2017-21.

Ahead of Thursday’s championship final, Team USA will see a boost as captain Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs confirmed he will re-enter the lineup after missing Monday’s contest versus Sweden due to an upper-body injury, as will recent Stanley Cup champion Matthew Tkachuk of the Florida Panthers who was sidelined Monday after suffering a lower-body injury.
