The PWHL’s Ottawa franchise named longtime Team Canada National Team member Brianne Jenner the first captain in team history on Friday.

The team also said that forward Emily Clark and defender Jincy Roese will serve as alternate captains.

The team made the announcement at the Canadian Tire Centre before the NHL’s Ottawa Senators faced the New Jersey Devils. Jenner told reporters that being named captain is an honour.

“It’s a dressing room that’s full of great hockey players and great leaders,” Jenner said. “So just really excited be a part of that group and to be here in Ottawa.”

The trio of Ottawa’s leadership group dropped the puck before the Senators-Devils game.

Jenner, the Beijing 2022 Olympic tournament MVP, has spent the last four seasons playing in the PWHPA and representing Canada on the international stage. She also served as captain for the Calgary Inferno of the CWHL, helping the team win the Clarkson Cup in 2016.

Jenner has won two Olympic gold medals and three World Championship gold medals.

Ottawa’s first two home games are already sold out. TD Place Arena, which also serves as the home for the OHL’s Ottawa 67’s, has a capacity of 6,500, but can add a few extra hundred people in standing room.

Their home opener against Montreal on Jan. 2 is expected to break the North American attendance record for a professional women’s hockey game.
