Officials from the QMJHL passed a resolution on Thursday to officially change the league’s name from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League to the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League.

The league unveiled the new name along with a brand new english logo to accompany the name change. The French league logo will remain the same.

The change comes after the league wished to specifically incorporate the Maritimes within the league’s brand identity, which include Halifax, Moncton, Saint John, Cape Breton, Acadie-Bathhurst and Charlottetown.

“Recognizing the immeasurable contributions of our six Maritimes-based franchises to the growth of our League has been of paramount importance,” said Mario Cecchini. “Out of respect for our clubs in the Maritimes and their fans, it has been a priority for me to include them in the name of the League.

“The vote to change the designation was unanimous,” he added.

In a league press release, officials said “most teams in the Maritimes Division have been integral members of major junior hockey in Eastern Canada for over 20 years, significantly contributing to the League’s success since the expansion of the “Q” out East.”

As of Dec. 14, the Baie-Comeau Drakkar have the best record in the league with a 27-3-2 record. The Drakkar leading scorer is Justin Gill, a New York Islanders fifth-round pick in last summer’s NHL Entry Draft, with 16 goals, 30 assists for 46 points through 29 games.

Leading the league itself in scoring is Israel Mianscum, an undrafted winger with 17 goals and 31 assists for 48 points through 29 games. Right behind him is Mathieu Cataford, a Vegas Golden Knights’ third-round pick from last year’s draft who has 19 goals and 28 assists for 47 points through 31 games.

The Quebec Remparts won the Gilles-Courteau Trophy last season, but are currently among the bottom of the league standings with an 13-18-0 record.
