The National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced Saturday morning that New York Rangers’ forward Matt Rempe has been offered an in-preson hearing for an incident on Friday with Dallas Stars’ defenseman Miro Heiskanen.

The invitation for an in-person hearing allows the league to suspend Rempe for more than five games.

During their game in Dallas Friday night, the 22-year-old Rempe hit Heiskanen from behind into the boards and was given a five-minute major for elbowing and a game misconduct.

Stars forward Roope Hintz immediately took exception and went after Rempe.

Before being called up to the Rangers, Rempe had three goals and two assists for five points and 22 penalty minutes in 18 games with New York’s AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack.

Rempe made an immediate impact upon entering the NHL. Getting into a fight in his first career NHL game, Rempe fought a total of four times in two weeks – dropping the gloves against the likes of Matt Martin, Nicolas Deslauriers, Mathieu Olivier and Ryan Reaves – grabbing the attention of everyone in the hockey world.

He would finish the season with a goal, an assist and 71 penalty minutes in 17 regular-season games.

Rempe was drafted in the sixth round by the Rangers in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. Through parts of three seasons in the Western Hockey League, the Calgary, Alta., native had 30 goals and 29 assists for 59 points and 158 penalty minutes in 111 regular-season games.

When he turned pro, Rempe spent the 2022-23 season with the Wolf Pack, scoring six goals and adding four assists for 10 points and 87 penalty minutes in 53 regular-season games.
