The New York Rangers have hired Jeff Malcolm as their new goaltending coach, according to senior NHL.com writer Dan Rosen.

Rosen is also reporting that Benoit Allaire will step down from his day-to-day responsibilities with the club, but will remain the director of goaltending. Allaire has served as the Rangers’ goalie coach since the 2011-12 season and with the club as an assistant since 2005.

Allaire has been credited as being a key factor in the success of netminders like Hall of Famer Henrik Lundqvist and current No. 1 goalie Igor Shesterkin

Malcolm spent the last three seasons as the goalie coach for the Rangers’ AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack, as well as a talent evaluator for the club. As a player, Malcolm played four seasons with the Wolf Pack between 2013-14 and 2016-17, as well as stints in the ECHL. Before turning pro, Malcolm helped the Yale Bulldogs win their first NCAA National Championship in 2013, earning a 36-save shutout against Quinnipiac in the Championship Game.

The team also promoted Brendan Burke, son of former NHL goaltender Sean Burke, as the new goalie coach for the Wolf Pack. He most recently was the director of goaltending for the Arizona Jr. Coyotes AAA organization, and before then had the rare distinction in junior of winning both a WHL championship with the Portland Winterhawks and an OHL championship with the London Knights.

Last season, Shesterkin had a slow start but wound up posting a 26-17-2 record with a .912 save percentage and 2.58 goals-against-average. His backup, the three-time Stanley Cup champion in Jonathan Quick, has a tremendous season, going 18-6-2 with a .911 SV% and 2.62 GAA, at times outplaying the Veznia Trophy-caliber Shesterkin.

The Rangers finished the 2023-24 season with a 55-23-4 record and 114 points, winning the Presidents’ Trophy for the best record in the league. They defeated the Washington Capitals and Carolina Hurricanes in the Stanley Cup Playoffs before being eliminated by the eventual Stanley Cup champions, the Florida Panthers, in the Eastern Conference Finals.
