It looks like the New York Rangers are looking to clear up some cap space.

On Tuesday, the team placed forward Barclay Goodrow on waivers.

Goodrow has been with the Rangers since being acquired from the Tampa Bay Lightning in July 2021. The Aurora, Ontario native then signed a six-year contract with the Rangers, with an AAV of $3,641,667. In three seasons, he has scored 28 goals and 76 points in 240 games, registering 10 points in 32 playoff games over that span.

The 31-year-old had a considerably down performance over the 2023-24 regular season, scoring four goals and 12 points in 80 games, his lowest point total since the 2018-19 campaign when Goodrow was with the San Jose Sharks. He was a key player over the Rangers’ run to the Eastern Conference Final, scoring six goals and eight points in 16 appearances.

The move to place Goodrow on waivers allows the Rangers the opportunity to rid themselves of the final three years of his contract, which has $10 million remaining in base salary.

There have been rumors swirling that if Goodrow were to clear, the Rangers would buy him out. With the two-thirds buyout rate, the Blueshirts would be charged $6,666,667 spread out over the six next years, an average of $1,111,111 a season.

Goodrow would not be allowed to be bought out until 48 hours after the conclusion of the Stanley Cup Final.

In his 10-year career, Goodrow has played in 572 NHL games, scoring 60 goals and 109 assists, including 24 points in 97 playoff games. He was a key piece in helping the Lightning win back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2020 and 2021.

Goodrow went undrafted out of the Ontario Hockey League and signed with the Sharks in March 2014. He spent six seasons in San Jose before being dealt to the Lightning before the trade deadline in 2020.
