Red Wings’ Alex Lyon out day-to-day with upper-body injury
The Detroit Red Wings announced that goaltender Alex Lyon will be out day-to-day with an upper-body injury.
Lyon was noticeably absent when the second period began against the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday night and did not return to the game. The 32-year-old played the entire first period, stopping all 10 shots he faced.
Per Todd McLellan, Alex Lyon (upper body) is day-to-day, could skate as soon as Friday.
Cam Talbot starts for Red Wings Friday vs. Blackhawks.
In his first 15 appearances in the 2024-25 campaign, Lyon has put together an 8-5-0 record with a 2.78 goals-against average, a .899 save percentage, and a shutout.
Another ailment would add to the rapidly growing list of injuries for Lyon. A rising backstop that was supposed to bring stability to the position in Detroit, there have been multiple instances where the Minnesota native has missed substantial time due to injury.
A lower-body injury suffered in late October of this season led to Lyon missing six games before another lower-body injury at a morning skate on Nov. 27 kept him out of the lineup for another nine games. Lyon also missed a couple of weeks in Dec. 2023 with a lower-body injury.
Subsequently, the Red Wings announced they had called up Ville Husso from their American Hockey League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins.
Joining the Red Wings in the 2022 offseason, the 29-year-old Finnish-born netminder battled injury challenges most of last season, with a lower-body ailment keeping him out of the lineup for 46 contests, ultimately limiting him to 19 appearances in which he went 9-5-2 with an .892 save percentage and 3.55 goals-against average.
Originally chosen in the fourth round of the 2014 NHL Draft by the Blues, Husso spent two seasons in St. Louis prior to shifting to Detroit. Husso subsequently signed a three-year contract with Detroit that carries a $4.75-million annual average value, per PuckPedia. Husso can become an unrestricted free agent in July.
Husso is one of four goaltenders to suit up for the Red Wings this season alongside Cam Talbot, Alex Lyon, and 2021 first-round draft choice Sebastian Cossa.
