Not good news for one of the netminders in Hockeytown.

Detroit Red Wings goaltender Alex Lyon was noticeably absent when the second period began against the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday night, as Cam Talbot stepped between the pipes for the Red Wings.

The team later announced that Lyon wouldn’t return to the game due to an upper-body injury.

It isn’t clear what led to Lyon suffering the injury. However, the 32-year-old played the entire first period, stopping all 10 shots he faced.

Another ailment would add to the rapidly growing list of injuries for Lyon. A rising backstop that was supposed to bring stability to the position in Detroit, there have been multiple instances where the Minnesota native has missed substantial time due to injury.

A lower-body injury suffered in late October of this season led to Lyon missing six games before another lower-body injury at a morning skate on Nov. 27 kept him out of the lineup for another nine games. Lyon also missed a couple of weeks in Dec. 2023 with a lower-body injury.

If Lyon’s injury is deemed to be serious, expect the Red Wings to call up Ville Husso from their American Hockey League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Tuesday night was Lyon’s 14th start of the season. In his first 15 appearances in the 2024-25 campaign, he has an 8-5-0 record with a 2.78 goals-against average, a .899 save percentage, and a shutout. Despite the inauspicious numbers, Lyon was starting to find his groove, winning each of his last three starts, including a 23-save outing against the then-league-leading Winnipeg Jets last Saturday.

The Red Wings (17-18-3) are seventh in the Atlantic Division but came into Tuesday night just three points behind the Montreal Canadiens for the last Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference.
