The Detroit Red Wings goalie carousel is back up and running.

On Friday, head coach Derek Lalonde told the media that goaltender Alex Lyon is out day-to-day with a lower-body injury. Lalonde stated that Lyon tweaked something during practice on Thursday, but didn’t specify.

In response, the Red Wings called up Ville Husso from their American Hockey League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins. Lalonde confirmed that Cam Talbot will be in net for Detroit’s game on Friday night against the Toronto Maple Leafs, while Husso is going to start on Saturday night against the New York Rangers.

Lyon, along with Talbot, have both had their share of great performances this season, along with a couple of tough outings. Lyon had allowed 10 goals over his last two starts, which has led the team to ride Talbot for the past week, leading to back-to-back wins.

Lyon has made five starts this season, posting a 2-3-0 record with a 2.78 goals-against average, a .916 save percentage and one shutout. The rough opening month for the Baudette, Minnesota native comes after he was one of the big reasons the Red Wings made a second-half push last season, almost squeaking into the playoffs.

The 31-year-old did have some injury troubles in 2023-24. An oblique injury kept him out for close to two weeks last December, while a hand injury knocked him out of the IIHF Men’s World Championship.

Husso had his share of injury woes last season, but hoped to have a fresh start this year. However, giving up four goals on 14 shots in the season opener against the Pittsburgh Penguins led management to put the Finnish netminder on waivers. He has looked in his short time with Grand Rapids, though he was out of the lineup for almost two weeks with another lower-body injury.

Yet, in three games, Husso is 2-0 with a 1.23 GAA, .958 SV% and a shutout. He returned from injury on Thursday, stopping 37 of 39 shots against the Minnesota Wild’s primary affiliate, the Iowa Wild.

The Red Wings (6-5-1) are tied for fifth in the Atlantic Division in points (13) but have the third-best winning percentage (.542).
