Red Wings emergency recall Jack Campbell; Cam Talbot day-to-day with lower-body injury
The Detroit Red Wings have announced that goaltender Jack Campbell has been recalled on an emergency basis from the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins.
The move comes after starting netminder Cam Talbot reaggravated a lower-body ailment that recently kept him out of the lineup for a four-game stretch. Talbot played a lone game since returning, turning aside 32 shots in a 4-1 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday.
“Obviously, [Talbot] fought through it, gave us an unbelievable game last night,” Red Wings head coach Derek Lalonde told Ansar Khan of Michigan Live. “Gave it a go early in practice today and couldn’t complete practice. He’ll be in the day-to-day range, I hope.”
The Red Wings are also without goaltender Alex Lyon, who remains sidelined with a lower-body injury. Lalonde confirmed to Khan that Ville Husso will start Saturday versus the Toronto Maple Leafs, with Campbell serving as backup.
A 32-year-old native of Port Huron, Mich., Campbell has made a pair of appearances with the Griffins this season, where despite losing both contests, he owns a solid .919 save percentage and 2.55 goals-against average.
Signing with the Red Wings in July as an unrestricted free agent, Campbell recently returned to the ice after entering the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program at the start of the 2024-25 campaign. He was assigned to the Griffins upon exiting the program.
A veteran of 176 NHL games, Campbell was originally chosen 11th overall by the Dallas Stars in the 2010 NHL Draft. The veteran netminder’s career has counted stops with the Stars, Los Angeles Kings, Maple Leafs, and Edmonton Oilers. Campbell has yet to make an appearance with the Red Wings.
Campbell joined the Red Wings after splitting 2023-24 between the Oilers and the club’s minor-league affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors. The majority of Campbell’s playing time came in Bakersfield, where through 33 outings he posted an 18-13-1 record alongside a .918 save percentage and 2.63 goals-against average.
