Detroit Red Wings’ defenseman Jake Walman left Friday’s game in Sweden vs. the Toronto Maple Leafs and will not return, according to The Athletic’s Max Bultman.

Walman left the game in the second period after colliding head first into the post of the Red Wings’ net.

The 27-year old blueliner appeared to be in great pain, staying down for several minutes and being checked on by the team’s trainer.

Walman has four goals and three assists in 17 games with the Red Wings this year, his third season in Detroit. He hit career highs in 2022-23 with nine goals and nine assists for 18 points in 63 games.

He is in the first season of a three-year, $10.2 million contract extension he signed with the Red Wings last February.

Through five seasons, he’s scored 17 goals and 20 assists for 37 points in 156 career NHL games.

Before earning a full-time spot in the NHL, Walman spent three full seasons in the AHL, scoring 17 goals and 46 assists for 63 points with the Chicago Wolves, the Binghamton Devils and the San Antonio Rampage.

Taken in the third round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft by the St. Louis Blues, he would spent three seasons playing collegiate hockey with Providence College, scoring 21 goals and 48 assists for 69 points in 107 games.
