The Detroit Red Wings announced on social media that defenseman Jeff Petry left Thursday’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins with an upper-body injury and that he would not return.

The 36-year-old Petry left the game during the second period and did not return. It was unclear how Petry sustained the injury.

The Red Wings would lose Thursday’s game 6-3.

Petry, a native of Ann Arbor, Mich., was acquired by the Red Wings in August 2023 in a deal with the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for Gustav Lindstrom and a conditional fourth-round pick. Last season, he had three goals and 21 assists for 24 points while averaging 18:48 of ice time in 73 regular-season games.

Now entering his 15th NHL season, Petry has 95 goals and 282 assists for 377 points while averaging 21:58 of ice time in 937 regular-season games with the Red Wings, Canadiens, Penguins and Edmonton Oilers.

Drafted by the Oilers in the second round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, Petry would spend three seasons at Michigan State University between 2007-08 and 2009-10. After signing an entry-level deal with the Edmonton, he would spend the next five seasons with the club, scoring 17 goals and 57 assists for 74 points in 295 regular-season games.

During the 2014-15 regular season, Petry was traded to the Canadiens for a second-round pick and a conditional fifth-round pick. He would sign a six-year contract extension with the club after the season, then sign another four-year, $25-million contract extension in September 2020.

His best statistical season came in 2018-19 with Montreal, scoring 13 goals and 33 assists for 46 points while averaging 23:07 of ice time.

In July 2022, he was traded, along with Ryan Poehling, to the Penguins in exchange for Mike Matheson and a 2023 fourth-round pick.
