The NHL Department of Player Safety announced Sunday that Detroit Red Wings right winger Jonatan Berggren has been assessed a fine of $2,148.44, the maximum allowable amount under the collective bargaining agreement, as a result of a cross-check delivered to center Connor Dewar in Saturday’s showdown versus the Atlantic Division rival Toronto Maple Leafs.

The incident occured midway through the second period, with Berggren assessed a two-minute minor penalty. Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews scored his 10th goal of the season on the ensuing man advantage before the Red Wings ultimately held on for a 4-2 victory.

A 2018 third-round selection by the Red Wings, Berggren is skating in his third season with Detroit. Through 30 appearances in 2024-25, the 24-year-old Swedish-born forward has collected four goals and two assists for six points. In all, through 109 career contests with the Red Wings, Berggren has registered 40 points counting 21 goals and 19 assists.

Berggren has also seen plenty of playing time with the Red Wings’ minor-league affiliate, where through part of three seasons with the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins totaling 130 games he has recorded 49 goals and 78 assists for 127 points. In 2023-24, Berggren headlined the Griffins with north of point-per-game production in tallying 24 goals and 32 assists through 53 games, part of an impressive season in which he represented the club at the AHL All-Star Game.

Per PuckPedia, Berggren carries an $825,000 annual average value and can become a restricted free agent in July.

Following Saturday’s victory over the Maple Leafs, the Red Wings improved to 12-14-4 on the season to move within four points of the second wildcard position in the Eastern Conference, currently held by the Ottawa Senators. The Red Wings will look to secure their second-straight victory when the club returns to the ice Wednesday against the Philadelphia Flyers.
