Red Wings place Jack Campbell on waivers
The Detroit Red Wings have placed goaltender Jack Campbell on waivers.
Campbell has yet to play a game this season at either the NHL or AHL level, as he had entered the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program at the start of the season. Details about Campbell’s reasoning for entering the program have yet to be confirmed, although that kind of information is rarely revealed to the public.
Whether or not the Red Wings have eventual plans to have Campbell on their NHL roster, he’ll start the season with Rapids if he clears waivers in hopes to get him into game shape. However, the Wings current goaltending tandem of Cam Talbot and Alex Lyon have worked well, so that will likely continue to be their tandem barring a change in their level of play or an injury.
Campbell did get into one preseason game for the Red Wings before entering the Player Assistance Program, where he allowed 2 goals on 22 shots for a .909 save percentage and a -0.03 goals saved above expected in 24:46 of ice time.
Campbell joined the Red Wings this summer after playing just five games with the Edmonton Oilers last season. In those games, he had a 1-4-0 record, an .873% save%, a -1.49% Delta Fenwick save%, and -3 GSAx.
After the poor start, he was sent to the Oilers’ AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condor, where he had an improvement in his play with an 18-13-1 record and a .918% save%. He also had an 0-1-0 record and an .857% save% in one playoff game for the Condors.
Campbell is currently signed to a one-year contract with a league-minimum $775,000 salary, and will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
The Red Wings will look to get a win during their California road trip on their third try when they visit the San Jose Sharks on Monday at 10:30 p.m. EST. Detroit currently sits in seventh in the Atlantic Division with a 7-9-1 record.
