A veteran minor-league scorer looks to be heading back down to the American Hockey League. On Saturday, the Detroit Red Wings placed forward Tim Gettinger on waivers.

If Gettinger clears on Sunday, he can be assigned to the Red Wings’ primary affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins.

The 26-year-old has been on injured reserve since the beginning of the 2024-25 campaign. Gettinger was ailing from a lower-body injury during last year’s Calder Cup Playoffs and has been rehabbing over the summer.

Gettinger was a big part of the Griffins’ success during the 2023-24 season. Along with prospects Jonatan Berggren, Simon Edvinsson and Sebastian Cossa, Grand Rapids finished second in the AHL’s Central Division, clinching the franchise’s first playoff berth in five years. Gettinger, who was in his first season with the organization, potted 12 goals and 25 points in 55 games. He did not register a point in eight playoff games.

The North Olmsted, Ohio native’s play was good enough to earn him a one-year contract extension with Detroit, which he signed back in March. The two-way deal carries an NHL cap hit of $775,000.

In 292 AHL appearances, Gettinger has scored 74 goals and 84 assists for 158 points. He also notched eight points in nine games with the New York Rangers’ AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack, during the 2023 postseason.

Gettinger has played 16 games in the NHL, all with the Rangers, the team that selected him in the fifth round of the 2016 draft. Gettinger’s first and only point came on Nov. 22, 2019 against the Ottawa Senators. His last bit of action in the NHL occurred in the 2021-22 season when he played a career-high eight games with the Rangers.

The Red Wings (8-9-2) are sixth in the Atlantic Division, while the Griffins (11-4-1) are first in the AHL’s Central Division.
