The Detroit Red Wings have announced that defenseman Simon Edvinsson will not return to Wednesday’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers due to an upper-body injury.

It’s unclear what caused the injury or when Edvinsson sustained it in the game, but he left midway through the first period of the game and did not return. The Red Wings confirming that he was out for the rest of the game at the start of the second period.

We have yet to know the specifics of the injury, how severe it is, or how long we should expect Edvinsson to be out of the lineup. We will likely learn sometime after Wednesday’s game or before Friday’s game against the Montreal Canadiens.

Edvinsson left the game with just a hit taken in 5:36 of ice time in the game, with the Red Wings losing 1-0 to the Flyers at the time of his departure. It’s possible that that one hit taken led to his injury.

With Edvinsson out, his spot on the Red Wings’ top pair alongside Moritz Seider has been filled by Ben Chiarot. That duo has been outscored 5-1 with a 32.43% 5v5 expected goal share in 99:30 of ice time this season.

Edvinsson will hope that the injury doesn’t keep him out for too long, as he had finally established an NHL role for himself this season and performed well. He currently has 3 goals and 10 assists for 13 points in 29 games, far surpassing any of his previous NHL season highs for goals, assists, points, or games played.

Should Edvinsson miss more time, Albert Johansson was the Red Wings lone healthy scratch on the blueline and will likely draw into the lineup in his place. Johansson has 1 assist in 15 games this season after cracking the NHL roster this year for the first time in his career.
