This past June, each nation revealed its first six selections for the tournament, which goes down Feb. 12-20, split between Boston and Montreal in lieu of a 2025 NHL All-Star Game. Finland selected forwards Sebastian Aho, Aleksander Barkov, and Mikko Rantanen, defensemen Miro Heiskanen and Esa Lindell and goaltender Juuse Saros; Sweden selected forwards Filip Forsberg, William Nylander and Mika Zibanejad and defensemen Gustav Forsling, Victor Hedman and Erik Karlsson; Canada selected forwards Sidney Crosby, Nathan MacKinnon, Brad Marchand, Connor McDavid and Brayden Point and defenseman Cale Makar; and the U.S. selected forwards Jack Eichel, Auston Matthews and Matthew Tkachuk and defensemen Adam Fox, Quinn Hughes and Charlie McAvoy.
In the tournament, each team will compete in three games in a traditional round-robin format. Three points will be awarded a win in regulation time; two points for a win in overtime or a shootout and one point for a loss in overtime or a shootout. The two teams with the best records will play a one-game final to close out the event.
While it won’t feature every top player given just four countries are participating, each of those countries will send its absolute best players, meaning the 4 Nations Face-Off will mark the first taste of best-on-best hockey since the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.
