A depth piece on the Calgary Flames roster is expected to be out for a while.

According to Sportsnet’s Eric Francis, forward A.J. Greer is going to miss “considerable time” with an ankle injury.

The 27-year-old had to leave Thursday night’s game against the Columbus Blue Jackets after falling awkwardly feet first into the boards after getting entangled with Blue Jackets’ defenseman Jake Bean.

Greer had to be helped off the ice, and was brought right into the dressing room.

Columbus ended up winning the game, 5-2.

Francis also pointed out that the Flames are not sure if surgery will be necessary for the former New Jersey Devil.

For most of his NHL career, Greer has stayed pretty healthy, only being out of action for a short while with an undisclosed injury last season.

In 47 games with the Flames, the 2015 second-round pick of the Colorado Avalanche has scored six goals and four assists. His last point came as a goal against the Anaheim Ducks on Dec. 21.

With Greer being out, losing Adam Ruzicka to waivers, and Dillon Dube on leave for an undisclosed amount of time, the Flames are going to have to dig into their resources with their American Hockey League affiliate, the Calgary Wranglers, for bottom-six support.

This is just Greer’s second full season in the NHL. Last year with the Boston Bruins, he posted 12 points in 61 games. In his 155-game career, Greer has scored 13 goals and 17 assists.

The Flames (21-22-5) are scheduled to host the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday night, a great chance for them to end a four-game losing streak. They are currently sixth in the Pacific Division, 10 points back of the Edmonton Oilers for third, and six behind the Nashville Predators for the last Wild Card spot in the Western Conference.
