Report: CapFriendly website to be sold to the Washington Capitals
CapFriendly.com has been a trusted resource for hockey minds all over the world as their up-to-the minute breakdown on NHL player contracts is a hockey fans dream. Come July, the website will be going dark, as they’ve reportedly reached an agreement to sell to the Washington Capitals.
According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, who was first to report the news, the Capitals and CapFriendly have reached an agreement and likely around July 5, the website will be shutting down complete operations.
Friedman cites in his report, both the Capitals and CapFriendly wanted the website to be publicly available through the 2024 NHL Draft, which is slated for June 28 & 29, and the start of free agency, which begins July 1. The sale won’t be official until both of these dates have passed.
According to the report, there were several teams who had agreements in place to use CapFriendly’s advanced tools and Application Programming Interface (API), however there were multiple teams who had received notification that their accessibility rights would be changing, which led to the growing speculation one NHL franchise was purchasing the entire website.
Dominik Zrim is CapFriendly’s co-owner and director and so far there hasn’t been any comment made from either Zrim or the Capitals ownership/management group.
CapFriendly was founded back in 2015 and has been an outstanding resource for NHL teams, media personnel and fans alike. It offered not only complete breakdowns of current NHL rosters and players contracts, but also prospect pipelines, future cap situations and interactive tools including trade machines and its’ buyout calculator.
The Capitals ended last season with a 40-31-11 record and barely snuck into the Stanley Cup Playoffs. General manager Brian MacLellan enters the 2024 offseason with $6.95 million in cap space, and one new website to add to his resources.
