Reviewing your craziest mock trades: Breaking down the deals that would – and wouldn’t – go through

The NHL Trade Deadline is just over a month away, so let’s have some fun.
While we have already seen a few blockbuster trades go down in the past couple of weeks, that doesn’t mean there won’t be any more chaos before 3 p.m. ET on March 7.
Daily Faceoff asked for your submissions for some mock trades that you would like to see. On Wednesday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk looked at them and discussed which deals might go through.
Tyler Yaremchuk: I have two Seth Jones proposals for you…We have one where it’s [the Chicago Blackhawks] getting a fifth-round pick…basically, it’s just they get out of the deal. There’s no money retained. They just send him to [the Dallas Stars].
The other one: The [Colorado Avalanche] give up Ross Colton, a prospect and two 2025 second-round picks for Seth Jones with 50 percent retained.
Frank Seravalli: I can’t see them retaining that much over that period of time. It’s five years remaining after this deal. Not for nothing, but I don’t think Ross Colton does anything for them. Maybe the second-round picks are interesting, but that’s a tough one.
I think there has to be some middle ground between these two deals. It can’t be getting absolutely nothing just to move off of the deal. I think there’s probably a little more value than that. It can’t also be retaining 50 percent.
Tyler: If that was 25 percent retained, or 20 percent retained, I could see the Hawks this summer going, “Yeah, Ross Colton. We’re going to slot him into our middle six, and it gives us a good NHLer.” I’m sure Colorado would like to get out of the $4 million.
Elias Pettersson to [the Buffalo Sabres], before that no-trade kicks in, for Dylan Cozens, Zach Benson and a first-round pick. That’s a couple of premium assets for Vancouver to get if they were to go down this road.
Frank: Is it an unprotected first-round pick? If that is the deal, I love this for [the Vancouver Canucks], and I would do this in a heartbeat. Pettersson could be something. We’ve seen him be something, but we’ve seen a calendar year-plus now of him being outscored by Brock Boeser. I think Dylan Cozens has a lot to prove, but what it would do is reset the Vancouver Canucks cap table.
It’s the first-round pick that’s super attractive from the Vancouver perspective. That Buffalo pick is going to be really valuable. I don’t care if it’s this year or next.
Tyler: If you’re going to pry Pettersson out of Vancouver, you probably need to overpay a little bit because Vancouver’s not in a spot, like they were with [J.T. Miller], where they were “forced” to trade him.
Jared McCann goes from [the Seattle Kraken] to [the New Jersey Devils]. McCann comes with some term…probably one of the most forgotten-about 40-goal scorers in the NHL. The Kraken gets Dawson Mercer, a second and a fourth. The contract details on McCann: two more years at $5 million. New Jersey would get some scoring punch, which they need. Does Seattle part with McCann for this?
Frank: I don’t think so. I don’t know how this helps Seattle. That’s the big thing that I’ve been thinking about for weeks and months now with this Kraken team. How do they find difference-makers? I don’t think Dawson Mercer could be one…But Jared McCann is among the closest to being one. This isn’t enough to make me want to jump out of your seat and do it.
I think that’s one of the big questions for the Kraken in general heading into this deadline. Can Ron Francis get talked into doing something that he doesn’t have to do…could someone pry Jared McCann out of Seattle? I think you could, but this deal, specifically, isn’t going to be enough to get it done.
Tyler: A swap of young players. Marco Rossi for Shane Pinto and a second. This would be along the lines of a stunner like [Casey Mittlestadt for Bowen Byram] last year. Two young players going back and forth.
Frank: Who says no? The [Ottawa Senators]. Why are you adding a premium in for Marco Rossi?
Tyler: You think Rossi’s a better all-around centerman?
Frank: Maybe? The Sens say no to this. They really like Shane Pinto. They have no interest in moving him. I think the Wild are concerned about Marco Rossi…you got to pay Marco Rossi next. That’s the big thing…I’m not saying Marco Rossi will be traded, but I’m just saying it’s a possibility.
