Robby Fabbri out for season with suspected torn ACL
The Detroit Red Wings are expected to be without Robby Fabbri for the remainder of the 2021-22 season.
Fabbri suffered a knee injury in Thursday’s shootout loss to the Minnesota Wild, and Red Wings head coach Jeff Blashill suspects Fabbri tore his ACL. He previously tore his ACL in February of 2017, and it caused him to miss all of the 2018 season. Blashill said it’s the other knee this time around, but Fabbri is looking at another lengthy rehab process.
The Red Wings signed Fabbri to a three-year contract extension worth $12.0 million ($4.0M AAV) back in December. Since joining the Red Wings in 2020, Fabbri has scored 41 goals with 38 assists (79 points) in 138 games, including 30 points (17G / 13A) in 56 games this season.
Fabbri’s injury comes in the middle of the Red Wings’ worst stretch of the season. They’ve lost six of their last seven games while giving up a staggering 6.0 goals per game.
In Friday’s practice, Jakub Vrana moved into the top-six forward group, and Joe Veleno replaced Fabbri on the top power-play unit. Vrana’s return to the lineup should help offset the offense lost by the Fabbri injury. Vrana has picked up right where he left off with the Red Wings last season, scoring three goals in his first two games after missing five months following shoulder surgery. In 13 career games in Detroit, Vrana has scored 11 goals with three assists (14 points).
