Buffalo Sabres’ Head Coach Lindy Ruff told reporters Thursday morning that captain Rasmus Dahlin will not be in the lineup Thursday night against the Winnipeg Jets.

“It should be short-term, but you never know,” Ruff said, adding that he doesn’t have an exact timetable for Dahlin’s return.

Through 25 games this season, Dahlin has six goals and 13 assists for 19 points. On Wednesday, he was named as one of the seven defenseman on Sweden’s 4 Nations Face-Off roster.

Since being drafted No. 1 overall by the Sabres in 2018, Dahlin has been one of the most productive blueliners in the league. Now in his seventh NHL season, the 24-year-old has 72 goals and 239 assists for 311 points in 461 regular-season games.

Dahlin’s best season came in 2022-23, where he scored 15 goals and added 58 assists for 73 points in just 78 games. Dahlin has hit the 50-point mark in three of his previous six seasons, and has averaged more than 0.5 points-per-game in five of his first six seasons.

Dahlin has been named to three All-Star teams, and in his 2018-19 rookie campaign finished third in Calder Trophy voting.

The Sabres are 11-12-2 with 24 points, fifth in the Atlantic Division and three points outside of a Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. Going into Thursday’s game, Buffalo has lost four straight games and are 4-5-1 in their last 10 contests.

Forward Alex Tuch leads the team with 23 points (eight goals and 15 assists), while Tage Thompson has 20 points (13 goals and seven assists).
