Sharks’ Alex Wennberg day-to-day with upper-body injury

San Jose Sharks center Alex Wennberg is out day-to-day due to an upper-body injury and won’t play Thursday versus the Pacific Division rival Seattle Kraken, reports Max Miller of The Hockey News.

Skating in his first season with the Sharks, the 30-year-old veteran forward has made 52 appearances in which he has registered eight goals and 15 assists for 23 points to rank seventh in team scoring.

Signing with San Jose after agreeing to a two-year, $5-million per season deal in unrestricted free agency, Wennberg joined the Sharks following 79 games last season split between the Kraken and New York Rangers in which he tallied 10 goals and 20 assists for 30 points. In all, through 764 career contests counting stops with the Columbus Blue Jackets, Florida Panthers, Kraken, Rangers, and Sharks, Wennberg has notched 99 goals and 259 assists for 358 points.

Wennberg was originally chosen 14th overall by the Blue Jackets in the 2013 NHL Draft. In 2016-17, as part of the Blue Jackets, Wennberg reached a career high of 59 points counting 13 goals and 46 assists coming in 80 contests.

On the international stage, Wennberg has also seen success with his native Sweden, underscored by back-to-back silver-medal wins at the 2013 and 2014 World Junior Championships. The latter year, in which Wennberg served as an alternate captain, he finished with point-per-game production counting three goals and four assists in seven games en route to the second-place finish. Wennberg has also twice previously joined Sweden at the IIHF World Championship, most recently in 2019 when he finished second in team scoring with 10 points in six games.

For the Sharks, the club enters Thursday’s contest against the Kraken sitting last place in the NHL standings with a record of 15-32-6 and 36 points. San Jose last qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2019.
