The San Jose Sharks are cutting ties with longtime blue-lner Marc-Edouard Vlasic.

On Thursday, Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli reported that the Sharks have placed Vlasic on waivers, the first step to buying out the final year of his current contract.

Per PuckPedia, the upcoming 2025-26 campaign would have seen Vlasic enter the eighth and final year of his current contract that carries a $7-million average annual value.

Through 27 appearances with the Sharks in 2024-25, Vlasic finished with one goal and two assists for three points combined with two penalty minutes and a minus-10 mark while averaging nearly 15 minutes of time on ice per game. A frequent healthy scratch, Vlasic also battled injuries for much of last season, including the first 40 games of the year in which he was sidelined due to an upper-body ailment.

Originally chosen 35th overall by San Jose in the 2005 NHL Draft, the 38-year-old Montreal native has since spent his entire 19-year career with the Sharks where through 1,323 career contests – the second-most in team history behind franchise legend Patrick Marleau – Vlasic has collected 84 goals and 295 assists for 379 points. A noted stay-at-home rearguard, Vlasic also eclipsed the 30-point plateau on three occasions, underscored by a career-high 39-point finish counting eight goals and 31 assists coming in 67 appearances in 2015-16. Of note, Vlasic has also added six goals and 33 assists for 39 points through 142 games in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, highlighted by a trip to the 2016 Stanley Cup Final.

Should Vlasic clear waivers and be bought out by the Sharks, he will become an unrestricted free agent and free to sign with any club as of July 1. Heading toward unrestricted free agency, the Sharks have two players who could test the market in defenseman Jan Rutta and goaltender Alexandar Georgiev.
