The red, white and blue has its bench boss for one of international hockey’s biggest tournaments.

On Friday, USA Hockey announced that San Jose Sharks head coach, Ryan Warsofsky, will be the man in charge when the United States heads overseas for the 2025 IIHF Men’s World Championship.

Warsofsky is coming to the end of his first season at his post in San Jose. The 37-year-old had spent two seasons as an assistant coach in the Bay Area and was promoted to the top job shortly after the team fired David Quinn following the 2023-24 campaign.

“Ryan is an exceptional young coach,” general manager of the U.S. Men’s National Team, Jeff Keatly, said in a release. “He connects well with players and is a great fit to lead our team in the world championship as we strive to bring home the gold medal.”

Keatly, also the assistant general manager of the Nashville Predators under Barry Trotz, was named the U.S. GM back in January.

While his first season might not be one to remember, as the Sharks (20-45-10) hold the worst record in the NHL once again, Warsofsky has had the chance to coach two of the top rookies in the NHL in Will Smith and Calder Trophy candidate Macklin Celebrini. Under Warsofsky, the Sharks have already surpassed their 47-point performance last year, sitting with 50 points with seven games remaining.

This isn’t the first time Warsofsky will be working with Team USA. He was an assistant coach under Quinn at the 2023 Men’s Worlds, in which the Americans fell to Latvia in the Bronze Medal Game.

On top of his time with the Sharks, the Massachusetts native had a few good years coaching in the minor leagues, leading the Chicago Wolves, the Carolina Hurricanes’ American Hockey League affiliate, to a Calder Cup in the 2021-22 season. Warsofsky was hired by San Jose the following season.

The United States will be in Group B at this year’s world championship, playing their opening round in Herning, Denmark. The U.S. opens things up against the hosts on May 9.
