The San Jose Sharks announced Thursday that they had signed 19-year-old defenseman Jake Furlong to a three-year, entry-level contract.

Furlong recently attended Sharks training camp for a second consecutive year and was one of 10 players cut last week and sent back to major junior. He was selected No. 140 overall in the 2022 NHL Draft.

Furlong currently plays for the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), where he was named the 35th captain of the Mooseheads to start the 2023-24 season. In three games this season so far, he has collected two points.

“Jake exemplifies the values of the Halifax Mooseheads. His work ethic, consistency and commitment make him a great ambassador for our organization,” said Mooseheads head coach Jim Midgley.

During the 2022-23 campaign, Furlong notched a Mooseheads defense leading seven goals and 43 assists for 50 points in 67 regular season games. He ranked 10th among QMJHL defensemen in points and also finished fifth in the league in plus-minus for defensemen with a plus-47 rating. Furlong added an additional 11 points in 21 QMJHL Playoff Contests.

The Upper Tantallon, Nova Scotia, product was initially selected by the Mooseheads No. 22 overall in the 2020 QMJHL Draft. He has appeared in 174 games to date while collecting 12 goals and 92 assists for 104 points in that frame.

If you want to catch Furlong in action, the Moosheads are set to take on the Victoriaville Tigres in action on Friday, Oct. 6, and the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Sharks will continue their preseason action with their final game tonight against the Los Angeles Kings. The Sharks are set to open up the 2023-24 season on Oct. 12 against the Stanley Cup champions, Vegas Golden Knights.
