The San Jose Sharks announced Thursday that they have signed defenseman Shakir Mukhamadullin to a one-year, $1 million contract extension for the 2025-26 season.

Mukhamadullin was out of the San Jose Barracuda’s potential AHL Playoff run after sustaining an upper-body injury in the third period of the Sharks’ final game against the Anaheim Ducks. Mukhamadullin registered at least 20 minutes of ice time per game in 11 of his final 13 games of the year before suffering a season-ending injury, including a career high 25:26.

The 23-year-old Russian blueliner split his season between the NHL and AHL, posting two goals and five assists in 30 games with the NHL Sharks and nine assists in 21 games in the AHL. He was eligible for the AHL’s Calder Cup Playoffs, after briefly being sent down alongside right winger Colin Graf.

“Shakir earned the opportunity to be a part of the Sharks, and was able to get some valuable experience playing against quality opponents that helped aid his development,” said general manager Mike Grier. “We look forward to his continued growth in the upcoming season.

Over his NHL career, Mukhamadullin has appeared in 33 NHL games, scoring two goals and eight assists for 10 points and has 88 AHL appearances, collecting eight goals and 45 assists for 53 points.

Internationally, he represented Team Russia at the 2021 World Junior Championships, appearing in seven games. He also represented his country at the 2019 U-17 World Hockey Championships, winning a Gold medal, and a 2019 U-18 World Junior Championships Silver medal.

Mukhamadullin was acquired from the New Jersey Devils in the blockbuster Timo Meier trade. Mukhamadullin was originally selected by New Jersey in the first round of the 2020 NHL Draft.
