Sean Couturier has signed an eight-year contract extension with the Flyers

Sean Couturier is going to be sticking around in Philadelphia long-term.

According to Frank Seravalli, the Flyers have inked Couturier to an eight-year contract extension worth $7,750,000 annually. The deal will kick in for the 2022-23 season.

Drafted with the No. 8 overall pick in the 2011 draft, Couturier broke into the NHL immediately by scoring 27 points in 77 games in his rookie season. Since then, he’s established himself as one of the league’s best two-way centers.

In 2017-18 and 2018-19, Couturier put together back-to-back 76-point seasons, a huge jump given he had never broken the 40-point mark before that. In 2019-20, he scored 59 points in 69 games and was awarded the Selke Trophy as the league’s best defensive forward.

Couturier is currently on a six-year deal that paid him $4,333,333 annually that was signed back in 2015. This is the final year of that deal and he would have been eligible for unrestricted free agency next summer if he hadn’t signed this extension.
