Kraken’s Brandon Montor scores fastest overtime goal in NHL history

Brandon Montour might not be widely known as a lethal goal scorer, but he holds a record that not even Connor McDavid is close to.
In a game against the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday night, the Seattle Kraken defenseman scored in overtime to give his team a 5-4 victory.
While scoring in OT might not be mind-blowing, how quickly it occurred was. Thanks to a perfectly set-up faceoff by Montour and center Chandler Stephenson, Montour was sprung on a breakaway right off the opening draw in the extra frame. The 30-year-old scored on a breakaway just four seconds in, making it the fastest overtime goal in NHL history.

The previous record was six seconds, which was held by former Toronto Maple Leafs captain Mats Sundin (1995), former Nashville Predators forward David Legwand (2006), Washington Capitals winger Alex Ovechkin (2006), Andreas Athansiou while he was with the Detroit Red Wings (2018) and Maple Leafs forward William Nylander (2018).
It capped off an impressive night for Montour, who ended with four points in the victory. The right-handed rearguard scored the first goal of the game in the first period and picked up assists on Seattle’s goals in the third to help erase a 4-2 deficit. It included a secondary apple of Janiy Nyman’s first NHL goal in his first-ever game.
According to StatMuse, it was the fourth OT goal of Montour’s career and the first since the 2022-23 season as a member of the Florida Panthers.
With the two-goal outing, Montour has scored five goals in his last six appearances. In 65 games thus far, the Brantford, Ontario native has notched 15 goals and 21 assists for 36 points. He’s tied with Matty Beniers for fifth on the Kraken in scoring.
The Kraken (28-34-4) are seventh in the Pacific Division, 11 points out of a Wild Card spot.
